SUCCESS STORIES

LAW Web Site = New Business

The LAW Web site was responsible for a wonderful new client for Peter Johns of Peter A. Johns & Associates, our LAW member in France. A major Internet news provider in France was looking for an international network that could assist in setting up new companies in the US and Europe. After looking through the LAW Web site, the company contacted Peter, and he has been retained to help with the expansion, which should also result in some work for other LAW members.

As a follow up, I wanted to note two requests:

(1) Please review your firm’s listing on the LAW site and make certain it contains the correct information about your firm and its capabilities. Clients DO visit Web sites!

(2) If you have a similar experience to report about inquiries from the LAW Web site, please contact me at sallyschmidt@schmidt-marketing.com.

LAW REGIONAL AND ANNUAL MEETINGS

Meeting Sponsors Sought

Lawyers Associated Worldwide is seeking sponsors for our regional meetings and Annual General meeting. Participation as a sponsor provides an organization with the opportunity to network with our members and be an integral part of our meeting. We limit the number of sponsors for each meeting to three. Sponsor benefits include:

  • An opportunity to give a 30-minute substantive presentation related to their area of business, such as computer forensics or electronic discovery
  • Attendance at all LAW social events and non-business meetings for up to three company representatives
  • Recognition in the conference materials, e-mails and during the meetings
  • Ability to pass out company marketing materials or include them in the conference materials for all attendees

The sponsorship costs at $2,500 US for each regional meeting and $7,500 US for the LAW AGM. If you know of any vendors to your law firm or companies that you do business with that might want to participate in a future LAW meeting as a sponsor, please contact Sally Schmidt at sallyschmidt@schmidt-marketing.com.

Remember our upcoming meetings:

  • April 7-9. 2005 – Americas Regional Meeting in Lima, Peru.
  • May 5-7, 2005 - Asia Pacific Regional Meeting in Hong Kong.
  • June 2-4, 2005 - Europe, Middle East and African Regional Meeting in Tallinn, Estonia.
  • October 20-23, 2005 - Annual General Meeting in Toronto, Canada.

CHAIRMAN'S CORNER

DOING BUSINESS IN CHINA WORKSHOP

This year’s meeting of the Asia Pacific Region of Lawyers Associated Worldwide will have an added dimension. In addition to the focus on work generation and best practices that will take place at each of our regional meetings, the Asia Pacific meeting in Hong Kong (May 5-7) will feature a “Doing Business in China” Workshop. Legal and business experts are being lined up with the assistance of Christine M. Koo & Ip, Solicitors & Notaries, our host for the meeting, to discuss such topics as finding the right business partner(s), choosing the most appropriate form of legal entity, current government/regulatory issues, protecting your intellectual property rights, and alternative forums for dispute resolution.

This should be an exciting and informative meeting, so be sure that the date is in your calendar and that a representative of your firm will attend, particularly if you are a member of the Asia Pacific Region. Members from outside the region are also welcome, and you might even consider bringing a client that is interested in doing business in China. More specific information will be coming in the following weeks along with your registration materials for the meeting.

Sincerely,

Christopher C. McCracken

LEGAL UPDATES

E-mail Retention

As e-mail has become the communication method of choice for most businesses, the legal consequences of e-mail retention have correspondingly grown in importance. E-mail is a possible source of liability to businesses arising from both the contents of the communications themselves and the failure to properly manage them.

William Savarino and Rowena Laxa of LAW member Cohen Mohr in Washington, DC have contributed an article to the LAW Web site, entitled: E-mail Retention: How Much Risk Can You Afford? To see their article, visit this link: http://www.lawyersworldwide.com/content/homepage_articles/legaldev-email_retention.html.

PRACTICE GROUP INFORMATION

Practice Groups are Up and Running

A message from Tom McCandlish of McCandlish Holton in Richmond, VA:

Thanks to great persistence on the part of Hallie Mann, we have six currently operating Practice Groups and more on the way! We have greatly simplified sign-up procedures, and we are counting on each of the LAW representatives to publicize this initiative within your firms. This can be a great way to enhance the visibility of LAW within member firms if we just follow through relentlessly.

Simplified Sign-up for Members

Go to the LAW web site http://www.lawyersworldwide.com/index.jsp

  • Click on “member log-in” (upper right corner of home page)
  • Sign in to member site with your own name and email address. Use the universal password. Contact Hallie Mann at halliemann@schmidt-marketing.com if you need the password.
  • Click on Practice Group tab.
  • Click on the practice group you are interested in to access their web page and then click on the “join” link in the upper right hand corner.
New Web Pages for Practice Groups

Please take a moment to look at the new web pages for the following Practice Groups on the member site:

  • Construction
  • Environmental
  • Health Care
  • International Dispute
  • Media and Entertainment
  • Practice Management
From the web pages, you can sign up to be a member of that practice group forum. The pages contain the Mission Statement and Group Objective as well as the Planning Strategy. The goal is to have articles and links from all around the world on these practice areas. Your help is needed to make sure that all attorneys in your firm are aware of these Practice Groups. Please encourage any attorneys from your firm that have expertise in these areas to sign up to be a member of that group and to share articles. Many of the Practice Groups also have a survey on their page. By learning which attorneys have specific expertise, it will be easier to refer work to each other.

Additional Practice Groups- Spring 2005

This spring, we will be adding a number of Practice Groups pursuant to suggestions at the AGM. Currently planned new Practice Groups include:
  • Cross Border Insolvency
  • M&A Network
  • European Corporate Law;
  • Intellectual Property
  • Oil and Gas
  • Private Client/Inheritance/Wealth Transfer
  • Commercial and Complex Litigation
Please stay tuned as we roll out the additional Practice Groups. If you have suggestions for additional Practice Groups, please forward those to Hallie. Remember, we are depending on each of you to spur Practice Group participation in your firm.
