President Obama Signs Law Creating Federal Cause of Action for Trade Secret Theft

On Wednesday, May 11, 2016, President Obama signed into law the Defend Trade Secrets Act of 2016 ("DTSA"), which amend the Economic Espionage Act of 1996 and, most notably, creates a federal civil cause of action for trade secret misappropriation. The DTSA received strong bipartisan support, passing unanimously in the Senate 87-0 and passing 410-2 in the House of Representatives. Read More »

Australian Property Tax Alert: Purchaser Must Withhold 10% of Sale From Foreign Resident Vendors

The new withholding regime is now law and will apply to contracts entered into on or after 1 July 2016.

Broadly, where a foreign resident disposes of certain taxable Australian property, the purchaser will be required to withhold 10% of the purchase price and pay that amount to the ATO. The withholding is a non-final withholding tax − it will be credited against the actual tax liability − and refunds or additional tax payments may arise. Read More »

My involvement with the Junior Lawyer Network (JLN) has had many advantages for me. I have made many new contacts through this network. Through the group, I have already generated business for Howard Kennedy and made valuable introductions, which have in turn generated business for other member firms. The JLN's Coordinating Committee, of which I am a member, has conference calls among its members from every region of LAW in which we focus on planning and providing webinars for junior lawyers on topics that are particularly focused on professional development. The JLN also encourages meet ups and networking to explore opportunities for each of us to build our own practices and to promote the JLN as step to future LAW involvement as our careers progress.
